Bread and Butter Refrigerator Pickles

4 c. sugar

tsp. celery salt

3 c. vinegar

1 1/3 tsp. turmeric

1/3 c. table salt

1 tsp. celery seed

1 tsp. (McCormick) pickling spice

1 tsp. mustard seed




Mix the sugar, vinegar and spices together in a bowl. DO NOT heat, this is a cold syrup. Thinly slice onions to liking into the bottom of clean canning jars. Slice cucumbers (a little less than thick) into the jars to fill and pack in. Stir syrup well, and pour over cucumbers and onions to cover. Tighten lids onto jars and refrigerate at least 5 days. Jars should keep for several months this way if they last that long. Keep in the refrigerator.
